With prostate cancer increasingly affecting several lives every year, researchers are speedily widening their studies and research to uncover as more facts regarding the illness as they can.
Cancer and all its types are deadly so is the prostate cancer also. Data reveals that prostate cancer is commonly affecting men aged more than 75.
Since many years, researchers are collecting evidences about prostate cancer. One such study is being run since 11 years in eight different countries, during which the researchers thoroughly studied about the causes of death in men, who were suffering from prostate cancer or was diagnosed with the illness post death.
All men were randomly assigned in to two different groups, one was the screening group, which was offered PSA-based screening, whereas the second one was the control group that was not facilitated with any of such screening facilities.
The primary outcome that was noticed by the researchers from their long-run study was none other than mortality from prostate cancer.
Results of the study were as follows:
11 years study of the core age group showed a 21 percent falling rate of risk of death from prostate cancer in the screening group, which rose to 29 percent after adjustment for noncompliance.
The absolute reduction of mortality rate in the screening group was read at 1.07 deaths per 1000 men, who were studied randomly.
Death rate from prostate cancer among the screening group men was even less than 1.00 in the core age group and for all ages.
"A man needs to make a choice for himself, realizing the benefits exist in theory, but the harms have been shown in every study that we've ever done in prostate cancer", said Dr. Otis Brawley, the Chief Medical Officer of American Cancer Society.
